We discuss how the infection environment can shape #AntimicrobialResistance phenotypes, an important but often overlooked factor for predicting antimicrobial efficacy against bacterial pathogens 🦠🧫

New preprint!👇
Pyruvate secreted by P. aeruginosa acts as a signaling molecule during infection, reducing oxidative stress, dampening immune activation and promoting persistence
Bacterial metabolism isn’t just a background process but an active player in infection🦠🧫

🧵 New preprint! Our 4-lab team evolved Streptococcus pneumoniae in antibiotic-treated mice of varying immune states and discovered something surprising: bacteria rarely evolved resistance. Instead, they found a different way to survive — by rewiring RNA turnover.

The final version of our latest paper is now published in @natcomms.nature.com!
This study illustrates how #AntibioticResistance mechanisms can reshape bacterial physiology beyond resistance itself, ultimately influencing infection dynamics in clinically relevant ways🦠

The @imili-micro.bsky.social project is such a beautiful and necessary initiative!
I am really glad we could contribute.
Special kudos to PhD student Lilibeth Torres who did the #Klebsiella drawing and wrote the text

How does treatment induced antibiotic resistance happen in real-world infections? We analysed 25k Pseudomonas isolates from 180 patients in a clinical trial to find out! TLDR: The ecological and evolutionary paths are surprisingly diverse & complex even in patients receiving identical treatment…
In this work, authors show that the loss of the carbapenem porin OprD in Pseudomonas aeruginosa reduces mucus entrapment and enhances airway epithelial barrier crossing, illustrating how antibiotic re...
Bacterial infections are one of the main challenges that our rapidly developing and growing society will face in the upcoming years. The pipeline for new antibiotic development is drying up, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising to unprecedented levels. Predictions on deaths attributed to or caused by AMR paint a worrisome picture that cannot be ignored [1]. In response, several initiatives have been launched, from improving current diagnostics to designing new treatments. Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently at the forefront of drug discovery efforts across several diseases.
New preprint out! 📣🚨
We found that loss-of-function mutations in the carbapenem entry porin OprD of Pseudomonas aeruginosa do more than confer #AntibioticResistance: they reshape the bacterial membrane and interaction with the host, enhancing epithelial colonization capacity 🦠
