#IrritatorBelongstoBR - but will the fossil be returned, or "handed over"? The German and Portuguese versions of the Joint Declaration don't agree. This is more than a footnote; the framing tells us a lot about how Western institutions and gov'ts struggle to acknowledge original ownership. [1/3]
Language matters - esp. in a political declaration where the word "return" wouldn't have required Germany to acknowledge wrongdoing but simply the return of a fossil to its original, rightful place. That this seemingly wasn't possible leaves a bitter aftertaste to this victory. [2/3]
ICYMI: #IrritatorBelongstoBR goes international! I'm hoping for many int'l and German media outlets to follow @science.org and @theguardian.com in reporting about this case. I've done a few interviews (incl. with The Guardian) already, so if you're a journalist looking for a good story, hit me up!
Aaaaand #IrritatorBelongstoBR makes it into @theguardian.com! Excellent piece of reporting with quotes from (almost) all the right people and a thorough engagement with the ethical, legal, and political questions surrounding the return. An absolute must-read!
Finally some high-level news coverage for #IrritatorBelongstoBR!
ADDENDUM: @lmhaertel.bsky.social caught another inconsistency across the different versions of the Joint Declaration that I missed. And even so, I think our perspectives on the question of language overlap a lot. If you read Portuguese, make sure to check out her piece as well!

I've reflected on the question of the language of repatriation and the legal issues surrounding it in a new blog post. It expands on some scattered observations I've made here, on LinkedIn, and in various news outlets. Feel free to check it out here: lawofthearts.com/6en/ [3/3]

#IrritatorBelongstoBR

Irritator challengeri, the best preserved Spinosaurus skull ever discovered, is finally heading home to Brazil! The announcement comes years after tireless attempts from Brazilian scholars to see the fossil repatriated from a German museum. #Paleontology #Spinosaurus 🧪🧪 New at @science.org

The German version contains the idea of exchange of fossils between 🇧🇷 & 🇩🇪 (in red) that does not exist in the original. Thus, it suggests a narrative of two countries merely sending scientific resources to one another voluntarily and under conditions of equality, which is absolutely not true. [6/13]

Spinosaurid fossil bought by Stuttgart institution in 1991 has been the subject of a long restitution campaign It is a 113-million-year-old bone of contention. After Stuttgart’s museum of natural history bought a fossilised dinosaur skull in 1991, researchers found it was the most complete spinosaurid skull known to date, belonging to a previously unknown genus of the huge meat-eating dinosaurs.
