This is bad. At least 9 county prosecutors in pro-Trump areas of Virginia have now openly declared that they won't enforce the assault weapons ban that the Dem state legislature recently passed. It's a MAGA nullification movement. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/2114...
In light of rising Black unemployment (now being driven by Black men), the role Black supervisors play, especially in hiring, could be transformative for Black communities. We're digging into this more and more, so if you're interested, pull up a seat. We're gonna be here awhile. ✨
We need to finish the work of Reconstruction. Even the second one wasn’t enough
Great from @gregsargent.bsky.social VA and the two purpling Southern states (NC & GA) are almost certainly going to see more of these nullification efforts in the future. The historical tradition of illiberalism in the South and the deep spread of MAGA politics in region make it all but certain.
It's not every day your FIRST academic publication lands a @forbes.com FEATURE! Absolutely WILD. 🤯 Thank you to Dr. Gassam Asare for interviewing @emmarackstraw.bsky.social and I about our new study where we show why Black supervisors matter in the workplace and beyond. #blacksky #econsky #news
“This country is great because of us, despite how they have treated us. And when I think about what I’m willing to live or die for, I would not sit idly by and let someone else come in and take away what we’ve built, despite some folks not recognizing the role that we played in building it.”
In our @forbes.com feature, we discuss how showing that Black supervisors matter makes a case for two things: 1. Improving how Black workers are viewed overall 2. Disrupting discrimination against Black people at work In other words, a win-win. #blacksky #news #forbes
Grand juror: "Are you actually presenting any new actual facts …?" Mecklenburg: "Are you going to be able to listen with an open mind?" Grand juror: "I heard this case like last week and I thought it was a crock of shit."

Governor Spanberger signed an assault weapons ban. Some county prosecutors in pro-Trump areas say they won’t enforce it. Is a new MAGA nullification movement brewing?

New research reveals that when a Black supervisor is watching, it can shift workplace bias and change how Black workers are seen at work.

Bigger story here is states like Virginia are undergoing what I call "de-south-ification." Spanberger's 15-point win shows power shifting away from rural areas in VA. Also to lesser extent in NC and GA. At some point Spanberger will have to address this rebellion. newrepublic.com/article/2114...

I've spent months speaking to current & retired Black service members about being part of the military in this political moment. What I found were officers and soldiers despondent at the resurgence of racism, yet often insistent that they were fighting for what this country could be, not what it is.

They devoted their lives to serving the United States. Now the nation’s top military leader is sending the message that they’re not welcome.

Extraordinary story. A joy that Sonny Rollins lived long enough to see this horrific miscarriage of justice overturned that once ensnared his father. Bless Aidan Levy and Terri Hinte for their roles in making this happen, and a H/T to @thenation.com for publishing.

I was delighted to learn, when researching for my new article in @thenation.com, that Black Philadelphians were talkin their shit as early as 1848 (decades before the Constitution explicitly guaranteed birthright citizenship, mind you) and they were right to do so www.thenation.com/article/soci...
