She used Google Translate, of course, writing short sentences in English. She did not use the voice app or translate from Portuguese. She messaged me to ask what will happen when they need to speak with the caseworker.
A family member (by chance, a translator) is at the social security services this morning in Portugal. An elderly Chinese couple entered the offices. They do not speak Portuguese or English, and asked for her help.
This is yet another story of how migrants try daily to navigate linguistically and culturally discordant settings, and how technology—most importantly, the members of the host community—can make a difference.
