A family member (by chance, a translator) is at the social security services this morning in Portugal. An elderly Chinese couple entered the offices. They do not speak Portuguese or English, and asked for her help.
An interview with Leidraad has been published about my research on language and healthcare.
We talk about misunderstandings between doctors and patients, the limits of translation technologies, and why linguistic context matters in medical care. issuu.com/universiteit...
She used Google Translate, of course, writing short sentences in English. She did not use the voice app or translate from Portuguese. She messaged me to ask what will happen when they need to speak with the caseworker.
