Problem is that it is extremely hard to get funding for cross species cognition and comparison of neural circuits across species emphasizing both similarities AND differences. Funding agencies incentivize "model system = human" claims and reviewers often hate on work in different model system.
Grants that include human and animal work rarely get funded as research communities working in different systems drift apart. Reviewers are focused on critizing the weaknesses of other model systems, rather than harnessing the potential in comparing capacities and systems and link to species niches.
