On April 30, 1940, the French Navy scored an own goal when the destroyer Maillé Brézé torpedoed itself by accident. During maintenance, one of the torpedo tubes malfunctioned and launched a torpedo which struck the forecastle. 37 crewmen were killed; 47 wounded.

On the 11 August 1943, Oberleutnant zur See Clemens Schamong’s U-468 sank below the waves for the last time and a battle to survive in the Atlantic Ocean began.
Sunday 18th June, 1944. At 11:20am, a V-1 missile hit the Guards’ Chapel at Wellington Barracks, near Buckingham Palace. A service was in progress, attended by a large mixed military and civilian congregation.
