On April 30, 1940, the French Navy scored an own goal when the destroyer Maillé Brézé torpedoed itself by accident. During maintenance, one of the torpedo tubes malfunctioned and launched a torpedo which struck the forecastle. 37 crewmen were killed; 47 wounded.
