I think benchmarking against NLP is super important for basically any research that uses LLMs for text analysis. It's what we expect of any quantitative analysis. If you are using a fancy new tool, the onus is on the researcher to show why that new tool is helpful at all.
A hundred percent. This is a validation loop— the act of seeking reassurance cognitively reinforces that the fear is a legitimate one. The transitory relief from the reassurance diminishes over time as this connection strengthens, until the act of seeking reassurance is itself distressing.

This is a perfect encapsulation of what I’ve seen happen with this thing that at first appears so useful to people with anxiety disorders who see it as a reality check. Eventually, they pop on for ten minutes for a quick pep talk, and suddenly ten hours have gone by and they feel worse.
It’s cute that he pretends the wealthy buy newspapers to make money instead of tipping the scale of public opinion in their favor.

Curiously, this is also why I think people who are typically storied by society as “missing social cues” often have such a profound sense of justice. An insistence on explicit communication strips away any lies that can’t be said aloud without immediately betraying themselves as facially bullshit.
