Excited to share my postdoc work on the cryo‑EM structure of the budding yeast telomerase holoenzyme! 🧫🧬
It’s been a real privilege to be part of the awesome Kelly Lab @kellythd-nguyen.bsky.social. Grateful as well to the incredible facilities @mrclmb.ac.uk.
Sweden continues major investments in research and life science, with more KAW foundation funding for trainee positions in the Data-Driven Life Science Program, with total investment of 330 MEUR / 380 MUSD!
Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation is extending its support for Alpha Cell with an additional SEK 320 million. Alpha Cell is a #research program that develops predictive models to understand how human cells function, adapt, and change in the presence of disease @scilifelab.se

FACT OF THE DAY. 26 March 1953. In a huge medical breakthrough, US medical researcher Dr Jonas Salk announced that he had created the first polio vaccine. Polio cases fell from 58,000 per year in 1952 to 6,000 by 1958. Salk’s vaccine was replaced by a new one developed by Albert Sabin in 1962.
How do peroxisomal import receptors return to the cytosol while maintaining the membrane's permeability barrier?
We solved cryoEM structures that demonstrate:
1) how receptors find and engage the recycling complex
2) engage with a transiently gated pore

Extended this (map_salami) a bit - added a movie option which will generate a labeled movie (1080p or 4k) transitioning between all scenes, with a short rocking motion at each scene for depth perception:
“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”
Resurfacing this post in the light of #RELION-5.1. Would be interesting to hear people's experiences now that Relion added "real subvolume" extraction.

Telomerase is a reverse transcriptase that synthesizes telomeric repeats at chromosome ends, safeguarding genome integrity. We present the cryo–electron microscopy structure of the budding yeast telom...
Added a little script to chimerax-trimmings to automate the creation of panels for model-map fit figures.
It zones the map around (by default) 40aa parts of each chain (but doesn't cut in the middle of helices). Saves each as a png, metadata to csv.
Saves each view as a scene for tweaking views.

We present ICECREAM, a self-supervised approach that achieves substantially better denoising and more reliable missing-wedge recovery in cryo-ET, while reducing training and inference time relative to comparable baselines.
Led by Investigator Scientist @hongmiaohu.bsky.social, @kellythd-nguyen.bsky.social’s group in the LMB’s Structural Studies Division have produced the first ever structure of telomerase from yeast.
