FACT OF THE DAY. 31 March 1889. Eiffel Tower was officially opened in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, the designer. The Eiffel Tower did not officially open to the public until 6 May 1889 and the elevators to the top did not become operational until 26 May 1889.
PERSON OF THE DAY. 31 March 1855. Yorkshire-born novelist Charlotte Bronte died (aged 38). She was the eldest of the 3 Brontë sisters whose novels became classics of English literature. Charlotte’s completed novels were Jane Eyre, her most famous novel, Shirley, Villette and The Professor.
PERSON OF THE DAY. 30 March 2002. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, died (aged 101). The Queen was at her mother’s bedside when she passed away at 3:15 PM at the Royal Lodge, Windsor. The news was announced by the Buckingham Palace press office a few hours later.
FACT OF THE DAY. 30 March 1981. US President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded outside Washington DC hotel by John Hinckley Junior. The president was shot in his left lung, which collapsed. The bullet just missed his heart. Reagan’s popularity soared after the assassination attempt.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 29 March 1943. Eric Idle (left) was born in South Shields, County Durham. He was a key member of the surreal comedy group Monty Python, helped create Beatles parody rock band The Rutles and was the writer of the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical Spamalot. Say no more!
FACT OF THE DAY. 29 March 1981. 1st London Marathon took place with around 7,000 entrants. 1 Million people lined the streets to see the race. The men’s race was won by American Dick Beardsley, who crossed the line with Inge Simonsen of Norway. Briton Joyce Smith won the women’s race.
