Okay folks I've responded to the data center heat island paper. It is the worst study on AI and the environment I've ever read, by far. Thank you to @beijingpalmer.bsky.social for flagging. blog.andymasley.com/p/data-cente...
"Even an elaborate cheating scheme won’t be enough to deliver Orbán victory if the polls are correct." This is a big deal:
Stalin is dead, the Soviet Union is gone and the Baltic states are independent and free republics.
Agree with the caveat that active defense is also VERY important for limited wars. The political costs of causalities are pretty much always high enough to defend airbases.
This is a great way for ICE agents to get absolutely wrecked by a bunch of swarming PFCs who know they have orders already printed and can’t really be controlled.
I think "the welfare state got substantially bigger during this period" should make the claim at least a *little* controversial.

My read is this is an attempt to pressure other states to get involved.

I am once again calling for Pete Hegseth to uphold the warrior ethos open.substack.com/pub/deadcarl...
Yet again, an illustration of the value, the imperative of the value of a broad education and the resulting ability to discern that which is war from that which is mere violence or a crime.
A major problem with being politically active online, especially On Here, is you lose sight of the fact that the vast majority of people are not only uninterested in politics, but actively dislike thinking about it You may think this is a bad, but it is true

Péter Magyar is a seemingly unstoppable force—but don’t expect the embattled Orbán to give up without a fight.

Missiles will always beat interceptors, active defense is only worth doing in defense of very specific very valuable discrete point targets (of which ships are one category but airbases as a whole are not), and airfields aren't defendable but they are (very quickly) repairable

New: The White House is signaling that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is not a must-have to end the Iran War, potentially setting the stage for Iran to continue to flex its strategic position over one of the world's busiest oil shipping channels for the foreseeable future

I dunno I think neoliberalism’s grand plan of dismantling the welfare state and the social contract and replacing them, respectively, with nothing and nothing created a pretty fertile breeding ground for fascism and this isn’t even particularly controversial anymore.
