⚒️🌋 South Africa may not have very many impressive active volcanoes, but an impressive range of extinct old-times (in addition to the kimberlites Erik mentions, there's the extrusives associated with the Bushveld complex, and the 2.9 billion year-old lavas I studied when I lived there).
I was going to say this was an eye-opening example of how question phrasing matters.
But then I saw the footnote stating that the first two questions are from a summer 2025 survey and the last one is from April 2026, and now I just want to hunt down whoever stuck them on the same figure like this.
We’re safe so long as they don’t find the big tectonic reset button at the bottom of the ocean.
