No car needed to hit the tracks in Oulu! 🇫🇮 With 900km of maintained cycling paths connecting to 350km of cross-country ski tracks, the transition from pedals to poles is seamless.
"Tampereen yliopiston tuoreen FinnCycle -tutkimuksen mukaan suomalaista päätöksentekoa ohjaavat yhä autoliikenteen sujuvuus ja vaalikausittain vaihtuvat strategiat. Toisin on pyöräilyn eurooppalaisissa mallimaissa, joissa kaupunkien liikennettä kehitetään pitkäjänteisesti yli vaalikausien."

Thinking outside the box, Oulu-edition. ”Paint vs. Snow? Snow wins” ”Paint vs. Light? Light wins”
You can cross the entire city—riding endless kilometers—without stopping once. The extensive use of underpasses means cyclists are separated from car traffic, keeping everyone safer and moving faster. No traffic lights. No waiting for cars. Just pure flow and efficient momentum. 2/3
We often talk about protected bike lanes and winter maintenance, but one of the most underrated metrics of a bike-friendly city is the uninterrupted network. When you remove the stop-and-go, cycling stops being a struggle and becomes the most logical way to get around. Just pure flow. 3/3
Oulu is such a great example because it contains so many components which USA/Canadians say render cycling impossible in their countries: big open spaces and distances; bitterly cold winters; outdoors hunting a fishing culture. All the reasons cited for needing TRUCKS.
