Increased firing could so far only be confirmed ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด surgery using microelectrodes, in the absence of Levodopa medication. Due to these technical constraints, most human studies have focused on beta and largely ignored the firing. We know Levodopa reduces beta โ€“ but how does it affect firing?
Parkinsonโ€™s disease involves two major abnormalities in subthalamic nucleus activity: 1๏ธโƒฃ Excessive beta (13โ€“30 Hz) rhythms 2๏ธโƒฃ Increased neuronal firing Beta can be measured ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ surgery using deep brain stimulation electrodes.
1๏ธโƒฃ Donโ€™t normalize power spectra. Absolute beta power (ยตVยฒ/Hz) performs better than relative โ€œ% of total power.โ€ 2๏ธโƒฃ Remove the aperiodic component using specparam. Isolating the periodic beta peaks improves the SNR. The high beta maps shrink toward the therapeutic sweet spot (blue sphere in video).
