Good policymaking is based on evidence. Understanding how decisions affect different groups is essential to ensuring policies work as intended and do not deepen existing inequalities.
The Public Sector Equality Duty makes sure public bodies consider these impacts when making decisions.
The Conservative leader will argue that the rules have become a "minefield that exposes almost every significant public decision to legal challenge".
Also there's an EU relations angle - dropping part of equality law would arguably breach the 'level playing field' standstill rules in the EU/UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, and therefore result in possible trade sanctions
So impressed with the Chair of the EHRC Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson who patiently explained the law, the Code and the relationship between the two to MPs who clearly either did not understand this or were determined to undermine both or the Code.
Extremely concerning from our legislators.
