Jorge wrote the (text)book on ocean biogeochemistry. But even more importantly, he was a mentor to so many.
I changed my major and career plans after a summer spent in his group, around his gentle curiosity.
He taught me that science is inseparable from the people who do it. I’ll miss him greatly.
Also flying under the radar is continued funding for the major U.S. contributions to the global Argo profiling float array that provides crucial information on ocean heat and sea-level trends, salinity redistribution, and with BGC Argo ocean chemistry & biology @bgc-argo.bsky.social

@davidho.bsky.social sharing the promise and pitfalls of ocean-scale gardening and other mCDR schemes to turn back the climate clock—and why they're no substitute for decarbonization.
Argo is an international program that collects information from inside the ocean using a fleet of robotic instruments that drift with the ocean currents and move up and down between the surface and a ...
Traffic enforcement in the US has been scrutinized in recent years (and rightly so!). But getting it right matters for safety, and bike/walk advocates should be shaping the conversation.
Proud to have contributed to this new resource by @visionzeronet.bsky.social that sets a clear path forward.
I'm impressed by the bike infrastructure in Seattle (I cycled 18 miles of it). Thanks to @sneakypeteiii.bsky.social for lending me a bike and guiding us, and @mtyka.bsky.social and @ethan2sea.bsky.social for coming along.
The Division of Earth Sciences postdoc fellowship solicitation "has been archived and will not have a competition this fall,” an NSF spokesperson confirmed to Eos.

Curious about how speed cameras can play a role? @visionzeronet.bsky.social also released a thoughtful guide on equitable and effective camera ticketing. It includes examples from cities around the country, including lessons from Seattle that I was glad to share.

Unfortunately prospects for future CDR innovation became murkier last month when Microsoft, which had purchased almost 80% of carbon removal credits to date, pulled out of the game.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has eliminated its postdoctoral fellowship funding for Earth scientists.
Climate scientist Jorge Sarmiento was Princeton's George J. Magee Professor of Geoscience and Geological Engineering, Emeritus, and a professor of geosciences, emeritus.

A sad day. Jorge Sarmiento, one of the greats in ocean science, passed away today. Jorge was a model leader; thoughtful, compassionate, and an excellent scientist. His leadership of @soccomproject.bsky.social transformed @bgc-argo.bsky.social into a global system.
I’m going to be in Seattle in a week. Who wants to show me their favorite neighborhood cycle lane?

Enforcement has a role to play in road-safety but it's being used in ways that don't advance safety. Our new report explores how to right-size it, make it a part of a broader Safe System Approach & why getting it right is critical to advancing safety.

Whoa. Seattle is apparently America's No. 1 biking city! (A sadly low bar ...)
The data from fitness and social media app Strava, while limited, will help inform the city as it continues building its bike network.
