"In the 1980s, Sarmiento [was] one of the first... to discover the importance of the Southern Ocean in controlling the atmosphere's CO2 levels." 🌊
"[He] mentored an extraordinarily large number of young scientists, who thrived under his mentorship..."
RIP, Jorge.

Climate scientist Jorge Sarmiento was Princeton's George J. Magee Professor of Geoscience and Geological Engineering, Emeritus, and a professor of geosciences, emeritus.
Jorge wrote the (text)book on ocean biogeochemistry. But even more importantly, he was a mentor to so many.
I changed my major and career plans after a summer spent in his group, around his gentle curiosity.
He taught me that science is inseparable from the people who do it. I’ll miss him greatly.

A sad day. Jorge Sarmiento, one of the greats in ocean science, passed away today. Jorge was a model leader; thoughtful, compassionate, and an excellent scientist. His leadership of @soccomproject.bsky.social transformed @bgc-argo.bsky.social into a global system.
