It's been a rough academic year, so my quarterly updates have turned into an end-of-year omnibus. Here's what I was up to this year at work, featuring #DHmakes, corpus-building, and a major milestone for the Global Medieval Sourcebook.
This could be a good sign - that #NEH needs more staff (no kidding) as they prepare to reinstate grants - but also note that these positions are being advertised as GS-7-9 - paying $30k+ less than in the past.
To do the same work as those of us who were fired. Think that through for a moment.
Or, for that matter, pitched in to help create a fansub.
😳 Man, I wonder how much that world -- the patience, the tedium, the labor -- really did sow the seeds for the DH origin stories of us old-timers.
My girlfriend really wanted me to show her kid how to use ChatGPT to do line art and cartoon versions of photos, over my objections.
So I showed him, and he hated the result even with edits. Instead he Photoshopped a photo of his head on Luffy's body and loved it. Just like the old ways.

I was grumpy that IB credits only counted towards electives (which I had my own ideas for) at UChicago in the 00's, but now I respect that position.
At the same time, I had some excellent IB teachers in HS & meh Core instructors in college and suspect I actually got more out of IB than the Core.

Here's the second part of my write-up for the year, which gets into some bigger-picture reflection on "hey, huh, some stuff I did over the last few years really actually worked" and relatedly, "what do I do now, since I can't work in the same way I used to?"
