Home is supposed to be the place people escape to, but Netflix’s “The Last House” turns that idea into the trap itself. The new thriller from director Louis Leterrier centers on a family of four who suddenly find themselves sealed inside their own home, with no way out and no clear answer for what is keeping them there.

Well, this is a rather big development, as Sean Penn (“One Battle After Another”) is set to drect an untitled drama at Warner Bros. focused on the events of January 6th as the Captial Police and other law enforcement were brutalized by a horde of violent Donald Trump supporters (after the President and cohorts stoked the crowd into storming the Capital Building) including groups like The Proud Boys (designated a domestic terorrist entitied by the Canadian government) and The Oathkeepers committing an insurrection on his behalf in an attempt to stop the official certification of the election by then sitting Vice President, Mike Pence (the rioters chanting “Hang Mike Pence” while his family was also in the building and had be escorted out by The Secret Service).

It’s been a tad quiet concerning what’s next for Jane Campion, the Oscar-winning director of the acclaimed and award-winning queer Western thriller “The Power of the Dog” (earning a massive 12 Oscar nominations in total back in 2022), and it sounds like the filmmaker has potentially found her next project and will push her into new territory.
While speaking with the folks over at Variety, the Kiwi filmmaker has revealed she’s now developing her first-ever musical feature film, but stopped short of giving any concrete details and if it would be based on any existing material or stage performances.

Women in Saudi Arabia were not allowed to obtain identification documents until 2001. They could be forced into marriages until 2005. Heck, Haifaa Al-Mansour made her first film in the kingdom (2012) before women could run for office (2015) there.

After the billion-dollar success of Disney‘s live-action reboot “Lilo & Stitch,” it was a foregone conclusion that the house of mouse would pursue a sequel, and they’ve landed on quite the filmmaker to take over directing duties from Dean Fleischer Camp (“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”), as Chris Sanders has been hired for the gig on “Lilo & Stitch 2.” The pic features a young girl from Hawaii who befriends and adopts an adorable fuzzy alien, who has a passion for causing trouble.

“People read fiction for emotion,” observed the late novelist Sinclair Lewis, “not information.” In an era where an explosion of interest in streaming documentaries and oral storytelling through podcasts, there is no shortage of information delivery systems for those intrigued by true crime and real cults. The chief duty of any fictional filmmaker attempting to cash in on this boom is to offer the emotional intelligence that sticking to the facts cannot always provide.

On paper, Alison Brie’s Elise functions as the protagonist of “The Revisionist.” This frustrated novelist, wife, and mother runs low on inspiration for her next story, so she looks inward to find drama in her own life. As it turns out, this coincides with the dramatic re-emergence of an old flame (André Holland’s John) – who also happens to be something of a rival to her husband (Tom Sturridge’s Jacob).

Filmmaker Curry Barker has already seen massive success with his first major feature debut, “Obsession,” but has already reunited with Blumhouse and Focus Features for his second effort, “Anything But Ghosts,” a paranormal movie with two ghost hunter con artists that boasts a larger profile lead cast featuring Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad,” Westworld”) in main roles, which will also see Barker in an acting capactiy with his YouTube comedy channel partner Cooper Tomlinson as well (the two playing grifer ghost hunters).

“Obsession” filmmaker Curry Barker is riding high after the box office success of his original indie that was scooped up by studio suitors and ended up making a killer profit in the process, given the film was only made for $750,000, and the global box office tally is already up to $287 million. There has already been early chatter of where the universe could be going in spin-offs or even with a follow-up like “Obsession 2,” although those talks haven’t officially started as Barker is busy with his next film, “Anything But Ghosts,” and has been enlisted by A24 to make a “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” reboot.

It’s probably about time to start rotating Susan Sarandon into the carousel of lifetime achievement award prizes. The Oscar-winning actress, who will turn 80 later this year, has been a fixture on screen since breaking out over half a century ago in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” It wouldn’t be fair to declare “The Accompanist” the culmination of her long career, but Sarandon’s scene-stealing turn will give plenty of cherries for editors to top a career-in-review highlight reel.
