(It'd be a fun series to research every obscure piece of history Mr. Burns references in classic Simpsons)
The drink was niche but (according to the wiki) popular with Mormons because they don't consume caffeine. Post made Postum from 1895 all the way til 2007.
In this ad, a man chides his friend for having failed to try Postum and continuing to drink coffee.
Turns out Postum was a coffee substitute dreamed up by CW Post, founder of Post Cereal -- the Road to Wellville guy who was obsessed with diet and enemas. He was super anti-caffeine, and so he made a drink you brew through grain cereal instead of coffee beans. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postum
I happened upon this amazing ad for Postum in a very old magazine. Like many other ads at the time, it's lightly pro-Postum and scathingly anti-coffee.
Here's a Simpsons reference I didn't get til this week, even though it's from a S7 episode, Homer the Smithers, that I watched many times. It's part of the fast moving montage that gave us "I asked for light starch on my nightcap" and "you call this a supercomputer?" #simpsons #postum
"To comfort me, my mom popped off her prosthetic leg and let me take it with me into class." From a little story, LEG MOM. New stories weekly. drboring.substack.com/p/leg-mom-ca...
