For the Ward 4 Councilmember seat, there will simply be a vacancy from early January 2027 through the certification of the election results of a Ward 4 CM special election, also likely to occur in May or June 2027. All Ward 4 voters will be able to vote in this special. /4
Congrats to @aparnafordc.bsky.social, who ran an incredibly impressive campaign for Ward 1 Councilmember over the past 10 months!
Now that Robert White and JLG are set to assume higher office beginning in early January, we will have two special DC Council elections, likely some time in May or June 2027! These will be triggered once they formally resign from the Council. Here’s what happens next… /1
The Green Team appears to finally be coming to an end in the District.
The DC mayoral primary largely came down to change v. status quo. And voters wanted change after the last 12 years. When all is said and done though, voter turnout is not as high as it should’ve been - a lot of the electorate just didn’t turn out.

The winners of the At-Large & Ward 4 CM special elections will serve for the remainder of the 4-year term that R. White and JLG were originally elected to in Nov. 2024: through January 2, 2029. The winners would also presumably run in the June 2028 Dem primary for reelection /5
The ~86 members of the D.C. Democratic State Committee will meet in early-mid January 2027 to select an interim At-Large CM to serve until the results of a special election are certified. The special election will likely occur in May/June 2027 and will be open to all DC voters /2
Under the current rules, I believe the winner of the DCDSC selection process only needs to receive the most votes (not a majority) and there’s no RCV. That person then gets sworn-in pretty much immediately and will serve in office for the next 6-7 months. /3
