I think Who writers struggled with Martha Jones for this reason -- she was introduced as brave, open-minded, and mature, already an ideal companion, which left the character nowhere to go.
I have it. John Wick is dull for several reasons, but chiefly because Wick is essentially infallible and invulnerable. No problems, no failures, no mistakes, no setbacks -- none of the stuff you build a story from.
For a great ultraviolent gangster movie, give A Bittersweet Life (2005) a go.

Randomly saw a cracking scene from John Wick (2014), so now I am watching it, which means I must endure many minutes of Keanu Reeves' manpain. Now he appears to be driving around the Top Gear track. Hey ho
