Just to indicate how shady POLITICO is: A few days before their announcement, shuttering E&E News, I got an email from their accounts manager asking me to renew my E&E subscription for a two-year contract, even though my current contract is not up until late August. Why were they asking for money?
The naïveté of these “leaders in the climate philanthropy world” is breathtaking. They should be locked into a room together and forced to watch educational videos about greenwashing until they develop just basic skepticism about corporate and industry claims.
Incredible new research from @gruberte.bsky.social and @jmijin.bsky.social
'We need to get off fossil fuels': COP31 negotiations chief tells AFP f24.my/ByYF.BS
Banks poured $906bn into fossil fuels last year. Either way it's a bad bet. If we don't decarbonise, the physical damage wrecks the economy they're betting on. If we do, those assets strand and they eat the transition risk. Heads you lose, tails you lose. Don't trust them with your money.
This article is exactly why we need @eenews.bsky.social to exist. Such crucial reporting — done by no one else. 😭
A few years ago I ran a campaign to try to get the @nytimes.com to stop making ads for oil and gas companies. It didn’t work. But we will try again. Many times, if we have to. One day, everyone will have been against this.
Months after telling staff that the E&E News brand was not going away, POLITICO is shuttering six publications. A statement from PEN Guild's leadership: This is unacceptable.
this doesn't even account for the embodied carbon of the data center itself which is another massive (and growing) carbon bomb spectrum.ieee.org/green-concrete

World’s largest banks pledged $906bn to fossil fuel companies in ‘unfathomable’ increase in 2025, report finds
The incoming COP31 negotiations president told AFP on Monday the Middle East war underscored the need to "get off fossil fuels" and rejected criticism the UN climate summit was losing relevance.

The AI Boom Rests on Billions of Tonnes of Concrete
Big data means big concrete. And that’s undoing tech’s climate pledges

wow Shell is trying to get expert witness Naomi Oreskes's AI prompts in discovery as part of this endless failure to adapt case Magistrate judge grants order, district court stays this article is like a madlib of all of my interests
We argue that public acquisition doesn't just mean paying anything an operator wants: here, we think market value is ~$0, and buying out the workforce might be ~$5b, but the climate damages avoided via closure versus a BAU /that accounts for asset lifespan/ are $1 trillion. Official BAUs are worse.
the AI boom is minting a new gen of billionaires, some of whom will soon be searching for worthy philanthropic causes. i spoke with leaders in the climate philanthropy world who see a chance to channel AI wealth into decarb and adaptation efforts that might otherwise never get off the ground

Absolutely wild to see that the NYT is creating ads with ExxonMobil that are promoted via...playable versions of Wordle in the ad?!

Apparently there are high levels of embodied emissions in data centers — which means the amount of harm they do to our for-now-livable climate exceeds that done just by the energy used to power them.
