The death of subtext is very very bad for textual representation by the way. It only reinforces and feeds into narratives of how to be queer and trans in the "proper" way, and dislocates queerness and queer readings from not-explicitly-queer texts. If something can only be read queerly in one way,

Hot take but i don’t think it’s trans women’s responsibility to deconstruct gender roles while everyone else gets to do whatever the fuck they want

if heterosexual texts can never be queer... what does that do to how we see the world? constructing such borders is a huge mistake when (rightfully) asking for More and Better queer rep.

In GO, we never say "trans." The characters are clearly trans, transition happens on page, sometimes erotically, but in imagining a transgender future, one must imagine that the broad umbrella of transition modalities and technologies would be so common to not need such specificity.

can i be frank and say the post 2010s turn of "this character is not explicitly queer & trans unless they turn to the camera and directly say their identity" which while coming from positive intentions of explicit representation which is Good has sort of had the downside of queer/trans erasure

(with the understanding that most people make art to eat) When writing it's important to consider that the primary stakeholders are not consumers or publishers or "the community" but *you* and the work itself. Any other model contributes to commodification, the reduction of art to a tradeable good.
