In GO, we never say "trans." The characters are clearly trans, transition happens on page, sometimes erotically, but in imagining a transgender future, one must imagine that the broad umbrella of transition modalities and technologies would be so common to not need such specificity.

You know, I literally did this. My debut novel is a desi lesbian book with a desi lesbian author. The POV character is cis and the love interest is trans. Intended as trans from the start, it's obvious enough she's trans that I got transphobic hate in reviews. She never actually says it out loud.

the implication is that unless a character says they are X they might not be inadvertedly feeds more into cisnormativity and heteronormativity than just accepting that queerness or transness as explored in fiction do not only exist when declared but are frames of reading
