Sheriffs are elected by voters, not hired by county commissions. Recent controversies involving sheriffs around the state show how that can complicate oversight when they're accused of misconduct.
There's no arrest in this case (yet?) but if the sheriff is removed/resigned/or otherwise out of office, I haven't been adding them to the spreadsheet I'm informally keeping of sheriffs who have been arrested. Maybe at some point I'll get serious about the data collection and beef it up.
