Much of rural northern California is public land checkerboarded with private ranches. Cattle operators dominate wildlife policy: wolves can’t pay lobbyists. When wolves behave like wild animals, helping ecosystems thrive, many cattle operators demand the destruction of this recovering wild species.
Nearly twice as old as the dinosaurs, horseshoe crabs have been crawling ashore for over 450 million years.
Sadly, their populations have plummeted by more than 70% in recent decades.
So we just announced our intent to sue the federal government for denying them #ESA protections.

California condors are the largest land bird in the US, with a wingspan of 9.5 feet. It’s been a long fight to recover them. In 1980 there were around 20. By Dec 2025, there are now 600. But the shooting of invasive/feral pigs (a widespread CA problem) with lead ammunition threatens condor recovery.
The mountains of Siskiyou County at the far north of CA outline the Oregon border. It is the territory of the Whaleback wolf pack (and offspring of OR-7, the famous wolf traveling from OR who was the first wolf in CA in a century). Subadults have dispersed into other counties over the last few years
“The last of Ireland’s great oak forests were gone by the end of the seventeenth century,” writes Lenny Antonelli in this story from our 2021 Spring issue. “But pockets of this ancient forest linger.”
Today, walk with us through the ghost wood.
This is one of the most important issues with the global food system, yet it is often ignored.
Put simply, we don't actually grow much *food* in our farms around the world. Instead, we grow grossly inefficient animal feed and biofuels.

A new study shows California Condors are behaving more wild, but this means they’re eating lead-filled wild pig carcasses more than the lead-free ones provided to them.
Bans on lead, hunter education & enforcement are vital to their hard-won recovery & rewilding.
