Spiro Agnew reportedly received $150k in corrupt payments, worth about $1.2mm today, before resigning. William Belknap, the only Secretary of Defense ever impeached, allegedly took kickbacks fairly openly for years, but was not convicted by the Senate.
Belknap needed the money to provide for his beautiful and profligate sister-in-law turned third wife -- by all accounts he wasn't shy about flaunting his sudden unaccounted-for income. Agnew never really stopped trying to justify his actions in sadly anti-Semitic terms. Hegseth is a combo of both.
