When I worked at Monticello, we learned a lot about Jefferson’s love of pasta moulds. But it was his enslaved chefs, James Hemings or Edith Hern Fossett, who brought the rather new macaroni & cheese recipe back to America and eventually made it at the White House. The recipe is via Monticello.org.

Augustus loved the spectacle of watching boxing 🥊 matches & regular Romans engaged in street fighting (Suet. Aug. 45.2). He didn’t set up a gauche UFC arena but it reminds us: men who leave warfare to others often enjoy watching others fight for their benefit—on a battlefield or in an amphitheater.
