Spending a fun couple of hours on platform 3 at Stevenage after failing to make an impossibly tight connection for a train to Edinburgh. A couple of northbound LNER trains have stopped here since but I'm told my Lumo ticket isn't valid for those. Privatisation eh? The gift that just keeps on giving.
The rate had already increased to more than 3 mm/yr by the first decade of this century. The decadal rate fluctuates a bit and has exceeded 4.5 mm/yr at times, but over the most recent 10 years it is a fraction under 4 mm/yr.

🧪🌊🧵 The oceans are undoubtedly under severe stress, but the figures quoted in this Guardian article for acceleration of mean sea-level rise here are misleading. 2 mm/yr before 2015 is only correct if you're taking an average of the previous 100 years. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

There is something magical about the juxtaposition of ice and the ocean. Unfortunately though, warming and changes in ocean circulation are increasingly turning this association into an unhealthy one for the ice.

Over the longer term there is no doubt that the rate is increasing and will present major adaptation challenges, but exaggerating the data carries the risk of causing people to question the science. If you want to follow the latest global data check out www.aviso.altimetry.fr/en/data/prod...

🧵🧪🌊 Today is #WorldOceansDay. My favourite parts of the ocean are those adjacent to Antarctica, Greenland and other locations where ice flows into the sea. Photo shows the vessel Bark Europa, taken during the voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula I joined earlier this year.
