Some army ants are extremely polymorphic. This photo shows a large soldier and a small regular worker of Eciton hamatum. If you saw them separately, you wouldn’t even think they belong to the same species. You might also notice the light color of the ants - both are callows / newly eclosed.

Excited to share our new paper on how tree community resource economics shape soil food web multifunctionality across European forests! 🌲🌍 We quantified how energy flows through microbes, fungi, detritivores, herbivores and predators beneath the forest floor. rdcu.be/fhmF2
May cover reveal for "Ecological Monographs"! Meet the wasp spider—bold stripes and a big climate story. New research shows its rapid northward spread is fueled by genetic change + plasticity, helping offspring thrive in colder temps Browse the May issue: tinyurl.com/4spjk7cn
As we pump more CO2 into the atmosphere our food supply becomes more impoverished. This Nutrient Dilution is a global problem for every organism that eats plants, or eats things that eats plants. IOW pretty much all life on Earth. bsky.app/profile/mike... s2.washingtonpost.com/4741705/69f3...

Nutrient Dilution and the Future of Herbivores: a short thread The fossil fuel folks claimed that all the extra CO2 is great for plants. Indeed, plant mass has increased globally by about 30% in the past century. But when you load a plant up the carbs, what happens to all its other nutrients?
