I contest the premise. Bring back the old games compatible with new hardware and leave the actual gameplay 100% what it was.

One thing I don't see mentioned when people talk about tank controls, is that it is the superior mode of control (in third person) when the direction the character is facing is important. Camera-relative controls either require multiple context-sensitive concessions or you have to fight the camera
