He cries when he feels cared about, or when he cares very, very strongly. There are parts of his life that have lacked those emotions.

Rider is a broken character. If he's crying it means something reached through that brokenness. Every tear he's ever shed has been bittersweet. Some of his happiest moments have come with tears.
That said, if *I* found him crying, I wouldn't believe it was him.

If I found my character crying?😕
Lawcket cries very easily early in the story. He's a small, gentle child. His feelings are easily hurt & he has no practice hiding it, & he feels sad for other creatures very easily.
Later he cries less opening, more often silent tears - 1/2
- on his cheeks than real sobs.
But he's also aware of a lot that's not here & now in the present, so him crying doesn't necessarily mean something just happened. It could be him remembering happy things that are gone.
