One thing I came across in my RESEARCH that surprised me is Evangelion is not nearly as popular as you might think it is. If we measure by images tagged with Evangelion on Danbooru, there are only 34k which is about 100k fewer than Hatsune Miku and A LOT fewer than any gacha game.

Basically since you aren't really doing the novel form factor at all, a more complex novel character has to get split into multiple archetype characters in fantasy or manga. This is what makes Frodo-Sam-Gollum-Smeagol so compelling for instance per LeGuin, (or indeed Shinji-Rei-Asuka-Kaworu)
There's an essay by Ursula K. Le Guin where she describes characters in fantasy in a very similar way to one of the two otaku book authors so I will CITE it. There are plenty of ways anime/manga are very unique but also not from another planet in terms of being fiction
