The deadline for signatures is May 2, so it's not clear when they'll submit. Polling consistently suggests this is a minority opinion, but one that has wormed its way deep into Alberta politics. Just this week the first government MLA came forward as pro-referendum.
A particular challenge here is expected to be verification of addresses. You have to be a resident of Alberta to sign and must show ID. Support for separatism is strongest in rural areas, where people are more likely to use a PO Box as a mailing address, which is not a physical address.
They need 177,732 signatures, or 10 per cent of # of votes cast in the last provincial election. (This is a lower bar than the pro-Canada side, as the law has since been changed to make it easier.) All signatures must be verified by Elections Alberta which takes a max of 21 days after submission.
The social media account for organizers of a petition to get Alberta separation on the ballot this fall are saying they've got the needed signatures a month early, prompting some claims that a referendum is "confirmed," which is putting the cart slightly ahead of the horse. Some context:

Ok step one is to make them look less delicious
An update on this story: This petition for a Canadian anti-misinfo law has been addressed--and largely dismissed--by the government, who say there are other ways to fight lying.
The author of the petition, which got 45k signatures, is not thrilled by this response. www.thestar.com/politics/fed...
Love to see an accurate usage of "penultimate," a word I always have to double check

It's hard to think about retiring from racing, because mushing is, and will always be, a huge part of my life. So I took a journey with my older dogs, who have retired themselves. They've taught me so much over the years; now, they're teaching me to live with change.
