Some great points about our current impasse on city-building. I worry that we’re not capable of building values of true equity. Calgarians love their little patches of land. Once they have theirs, they are fiercely protective.
"Calgarians need spaces where we can overcome the market’s impetus to keep us segregated by income and class; where we can have meaningful discussions, disagreements even, with people unlike us, and realize, maybe, that we are all equal." #yyc #abpoli

I started writing a Substack about the Calgary’s rezoning ordeal, but then i realized i was repeating myself.
Upzoning is the only measure within the city’s jurisdiction to mitigate the rising cost of housing—but density produces inequitable results too.
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that her country has every right to send fuel to Cuba, whether for humanitarian or commercial reasons.
This is not to say that we shouldn’t increase our city’s density. We just shouldn’t act as if enabling choice for a few benefits everyone.
To build a more equitable city, it’s Calgarians and our values that need to change first.
In my latest essay, i argue that making room for more nuanced discourse, criticism, is an essential step to creating a society that builds better cities.
