It's not just about species numbers on @mariposanature.bsky.social butterfly holidays. An occasional early morning walk from our Italian Alps hotel can bring the wonderful delights of torpid roosting butterflies. Which allows excellent photo opportunities.

Brilliant butterflies came thick and fast today, a massive highlight being this velvety, iridescent, fresh male Poplar Admiral (Limenitis populi) of the dark tremulae form.

While the good butterflies kept on coming today, there were plenty of further distractions to be had for our guests, not least in the form of immense Trumpet Gentians bluer than even the sky overhead. Bliss!

My local church has some wonderful wild areas, incl a Badger Sett, Tawny Owl nest boxes, Swift boxes and water features. Meadow areas with Oxeye Daisy, Common Knapweed and Hogweed. Also Wood Avens, Red Valerian, White Clover, Birds-foot Trefoil and Green Alkanet.🌸

Day 4 of the @mariposanature.bsky.social holiday to the Italian Alps was spent mostly at higher altitude. The views and alpine botany stole the show, albeit Mountain Green Veined White was a nice addition the butterfly species list, which has now topped 100 species after just 4 days.
