It's Dactylorhiza season again in Britain - you either love 'em or hate 'em*, it seems, as every year they puzzle and confound as folk puzzle over identifications.

One of my favourite butterflies of the Alps is the Sooty Copper Lycaena tityrus. Unlike many Lycaenids the male is plain brown and the female (shown) is more well marked. Never abundant, always indicates a good habitat! @europebutterfly.bsky.social
Churchyards can be good for more than pushing up the daisies - they can be absolute havens for wildlife of many descriptions, including wildflowers.

Some of my happiest European butterfly-watching moments over the years have come exploring the countryside of North Greece, finding new sites for the likes of Large Copper, Sandy Grizzled Skipper, Iolas Blue and Freyer's Purple Emperor.
