A related issue is when this kind of infrastructure has low contrast between surfaces/levels, or tons of visual clutter, or when crucial upright markers get destroyed and aren't replaced (inevitable). Anyone who bikes Harrison across State in Chicago will know what I'm talking about!

I am pro-protected intersection, and the design nuance that Warren raises in this thread is important.
Apart from the human error risk of a solo crash, performing this swerve while entering the intersection distracts me from watching traffic and miscommunicates a turning intention to drivers.

I am on record that protected corners, when designed so that they put a 6" curb directly in the path of travel of a bicyclist, are a hazard.
Yes, this does have the effect of limiting the likelihood of right-hook crashes, but also almost certainly causes solo crashes that will never be reported.
