Child psychotherapy's founding luminaries wrote about drawing autistic children out of their 'encapsulated shell.' The rescue narrative. The triumphant therapist. The child as patient.
Rowena Mahmud asks: can we do better?

On 'splinter skills': "Often autistic ppl are really very good at things we’re good at. Mostly the skills are the result of putting a lot of work in because we’re interested in it, not that we always have much control over where our interest takes us." @stimpunks.org:

Psychoanalysis pathologized autism from the start. The 'autism as facehugger' model. The knight-therapist. The child to be rescued from themselves.
What neuroqueering child psychotherapy could look like instead.

Every series we build asks the same question:
Who designed this system? Who does it serve? Who does it harm? And who profits from calling that harm inevitable?

The social model of disability applied to education:
The problem isn't the neurodivergent student.
The problem is what we've built around them.
We document the harm. We name the mechanism.

Child psychotherapy has the potential to offer a nuanced, multidimensional perspective on children's internal worlds. It also has a deeply problematic view of neurodivergence rooted in the pathology paradigm.
What would it look like to neuroqueer it?
stimpunks.org/2024/04/12/n...
'The autism as a pathology is firmly pushed into the beholder's body. What is not recognised is the differential power relationships at play, the sense of autistic bodies being policed.'

We have autistic children who need us to support them as architects of their own liberation. Neurodiversity is an equity imperative and is critical in shifting the culture of teaching and learning.…
Outrageous! #StopTheShock
“The deadline, pegged to the end of May, has now passed without a verdict, leaving disability rights activists and former recipients of these shocks worried that they will continue.”
This is barbaric and we can’t allow our Autistic & other disabled friends suffer this way

The FDA has missed a self-imposed deadline to ban the use of electrical shock devices in people with intellectual disabilities.
Oh! I found an update from Sam Farmer on his #StopTheShock advocacy
In Feb 2026 they designated H.245 as being subjected to a “study order” which is reportedly a common strategy to kill bills
They want to keep zapping autistic kids when misbehaving & don’t care about the trauma they are causing

A travesty of justice! Clearly, the powers that be don’t have their priorities straight.
