Hall of Fame left-hander Carl Hubbell was born on this date in 1903. Before winning 253 games for the New York Giants, he won seven games for the IL's Toronto Maple Leafs in 1926. He is fourth from the right in the front row in this 1926 Maple Leafs team photo. He died in 1988.
56 years ago today, the Montreal Expos signed outfielder Bombo Rivera as an amateur free agent. He batted .268 in 73 games in parts of two seasons with the Expos in 1975 and 1976.
25 years ago today, Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.) recorded his first MLB hit with the St. Louis Cardinals. He pinch-hit for pitcher Luther Hackman in the bottom of the ninth inning and hit a leadoff double off Giants righty Livan Hernandez at Busch Stadium.
40 years ago today, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 15-1 at Exhibition Stadium. Tony Fernandez and Ernie Whitt knocked in four runs each, while Jimmy Key started and allowed just one run in eight innings to earn the win.
