They've gotten used to pretending all sorts of terrifying shit going on around them isn't real. This is just one more thing to ignore.
And let me emphasize: the higher standards and better math are only true on the margin. Social science in general is a shitshow at both of these things and economics is merely the first social science to get *passably* good at them.
