Check out this report on what happens when a journal pays reviewers for their work. Fast turnaround times and streamlined experience for authors. @biologyopen.bsky.social published by @biologists.bsky.social has now gone beyond the trial and show the results from a year of implementing Fast & Fair.
#CrohnsDisease is associated with NOD2 mutations, but what's NOD2's role in the #intestine? Mckenna Eklund & @edanfoley.bsky.social show that #NOD2 interacts with #estrogen to regulate intestinal homeostasis, perhaps explaining the sex-specific pathogenesis of CD @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4ojTEuZ

Paying peer reviewers works. Expanded Fast & Fair experiment @biologyopen.bsky.social: • 5.5 vs 37.7 working days to decision with reviews • ~3 vs ~9 reviewer invitations per manuscript • no reduction in editor-assessed review quality • similar acceptance rates www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

When the light sends rainbows, you celebrate
Normally writing papers exhausts me, but working on this brought such joy. A very exciting study from Mckenna linking errant estrogen signaling with gut defects in NOD2-deficient fish.

the cat may be shedding just a little
Everyone once in a while you do some computer archeology and end up coming across old friends, like this IHC image of blood cells in the gut of an adult fish. I remember seeing these cells pushing their way into the epithelium, and thinking "look at you little heroes"

Crohn’s disease is associated with mutations in the innate immune receptor NOD2, but the mechanisms underlying NOD2 regulation of intestinal homeostasis remain unclear. This study shows that NOD2 inte...

#FluorescenceFriday fabulous served by Mckenna. A fish gut with nuclei in blue, phagocytes in red, and f-actin in white 🤩. I love the organised chaos of the apical brush borders at the luminal interface, while macrophages stubbornly cling to the basal surface.
