Hawaiʻian kai: "sea" and Japanese 海/かい/kai: "ocean, sea", definitely no relation. They come from *tasik and something like *m̥ˤəʔ, respectively
On the other hand, Hawaiʻian ʻīlio: "dog" and Japanese 犬/いぬ/inu: "dog" are plausibly (but not certainly) related, from something like *(ŋ)kuɣ(kuɣ)
I also restructured how transliteration information is stored, so I can start working on bring the transliterator back bigger and better!
So explore the script explorer! Let me know

Huh. I just noticed Hawaiʻian "lilo" has a similar range of meanings:
to pass into the possession of another, to change from one state to another, to be lost, to perish, to turn, to be busy, to be devoted, to be distant, completely
The Japanese word for walrus is "seiuchi", which is borrowed from Russian "sivuč". But "sivuč" has gotta be a borrowing from something else. Looks ... Evenki or something?
Does anyone know?
