Thing is, Orbán is many things but he is definitely not stupid: he and his merry band of renegade lawyers have been at it for 16 years now, carefully dismantling democracy in Hungary while making fools of the EU. And despite that, still looks like he's headed for a defeat.

Soviet leaders from Stalin on down (Putin included) believed in spheres of influence. Brezhnev developed a whole doctrine justifying intervention to protect Soviet influence and interests.
