Soviet leaders from Stalin on down (Putin included) believed in spheres of influence. Brezhnev developed a whole doctrine justifying intervention to protect Soviet influence and interests.
This led to Afghanistan, permanent hostility from most of ECE, and the special military debacle in Ukraine.
