The UK is a state conditioned to treat all political actors on the right of politics as basically good chaps, and left activism as dangerous subversion (the story of Ewing & Gearty's work). It isn't (just) a Starmer personality issue, its a systemic defect that is now being mercilessly exploited:
The state of this government and the media: instead of a speech from the Prime Minister reassuring familiies that have been victims of a racist pogrom, we get another government minister touring the airwaves to raise the "genuine concern" of immigrants coming into the UK from the south of Ireland.
Has any leading politician made it clear these are not protestors expressing legitimate concerns yet? Or are they seeing how that will poll with the far right first? I hate it here.
We can't look away from the images of families fleeing burning houses without calling this out as a pogrom, whipped up by influential actors who care nothing for the people of Belfast:
