I think it also contextualizes the PRC's foreign policy. Deng liberalized China, which I think was indeed necessary to an extent, but inevitably, also drove it further to the right. Xi Jinping returned to Mao's pragmatism which unfortunately does include seemingly inconsistent FP positions
