Cars create the illusion that we all operate alone. The world zips by while we sit in solitude. We don’t pass other people—we pass other cars. The car dehumanizes our neighbors and friends. The incentive to speed doubled by mechanical ease, anything that slows us down causes rage.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that an author whose line edit is done and whose book has gone to copyedit must be in want of new stickers for her laptop by way of celebration. Luckily, it’s an easy fix.
I don’t know why this winds me up as much as it does, but it really, really does. It’s possible to call spending time away from home but still in the country where you already live “a holiday” because that’s what it is.
